Te Ara Korowai come out top in Kāpiti Community Awards

4 Aug 2021

Last night Te Ara Korowai were announced as Kāpiti’s Supreme Award winners in the 2021 Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards.

Te Ara Korowai is a community mental health and wellbeing creativity hub. They offer a range of creative classes, wellbeing workshops and peer support to support individuals navigate their journey back to mental wellness. When the country went into lockdown last year the centre staff and volunteers all worked hard to establish online Zoom classes and workshops, deliver hard packs of resources to all members so they could do art in their home and offered support and connection with daily phone calls. The incredible art that was produced by members during lockdown was then exhibited and sold at the Kapiti Arts Trail and an exhibition at Mahara Gallery.

“We are absolutely thrilled. These awards recognise the amazing work done by volunteers and not for profit groups in the community” said a representative from Te Ara Korowai “We were nominated for the incredible work of our volunteers (and staff who worked well over their paid hours) over the lockdown period. Our Centre quickly moved to online creative classes and Peer Support ensuring our members were connected and supported during a potentially isolated period. We would like to acknowledge our volunteers, past and present. These awards are for you”.

Wellington International Airport, Wellington Community Trust, and the five local councils come together to recognise the work carried out by community group volunteers in the wider Wellington region.

The winning community groups from Kāpiti will join winners from around the region for the award finals in November.
