Wellington Airport withdraws Cobham Drive court action

13 May 2022

Wellington Airport has today withdrawn its judicial review of the decision to install a pedestrian crossing on Cobham Drive on State Highway 1.

“It’s time to move on and focus on the bigger transport issues for Wellington. Prolonged legal action won’t benefit anyone now that construction has been allowed to begin,” says Wellington Airport chief executive Matt Clarke.

This follows a decision by the High Court last Friday (6th May) not to grant an application by Wellington Airport for an interim injunction stopping construction of the crossing.

“We still think an overpass would have been a much better and safer solution, and this had strong support from Wellingtonians and businesses. It would avoid the need for a crossing on State Highway 1, which can only add to congestion.

“We want to work constructively with Let’s Get Wellington Moving as they develop plans for mass rapid transit and other key projects. Our hope is that the views of local residents and the business community will be listened to carefully.

“We all have a strong shared interest in improving our transport network to create a more liveable and sustainable city.”
