East side area and landscape buffer

Wellington Airport’s new carpark officially opened on the eastern side of the airport in April 2025, providing over 800 new carparking options for travellers.
The new carpark covers approximately two hectares and includes landscaping and boundary treatments to improve the look and feel of the area.
It has been built on land previously belonging to Miramar Golf Club which was sold to Wellington Airport in 2019, although as part of the deal the airport did not take full possession of the land until 1 January 2025.
Due to growing demands for space, our next required step is to relocate our rental cars, taxi pen and staff car parks. These services will wrap around the new carpark on the eastern side but will not impact the upcoming landscape buffer area. This work is likely to begin in around two years time.
Landscape buffer area
We are also planning landscaping and boundary improvements along the eastern edge of the land previously owned by the golf course, adjacent to Bunker Way and Raukawa Street. The proposed buffer area will create an attractive area featuring new shared pathways, seating, and public spaces.
Landscape Architects from Boffa-Miskell have provided draft concepts for the landscape buffer area based on council requirements, our Landscape Visual Management Plan and previous consultation with the local community and direct neighbours.
We expect work on this landscape buffer area to commence in late 2026.
You can view some concept ideas for this area in this document.
We will continue to keep the community updated and as always, we are happy to answer any questions via wellingtonairport@wellingtonairport.co.nz.
