Wellington Airport welcomes today’s announcement by Singapore Airlines that it is replacing its Canberra transit stop with Melbourne for travellers flying from Wellington to Singapore via Australia from May 1 2018.

Wellington services will continue at four flights per week and flight time on the new service will reduce by 25 minutes.

“The Singapore service has been near capacity onwards from Canberra over the busy summer season, and we recognise the need to develop the long-haul service for both the Wellington and Canberra markets”, says Wellington Airport CEO Steve Sanderson.

“This new transit will add further opportunity for travellers to access more seats to Singapore and beyond as a result of the change. Transit through Melbourne will also create the flexibility to add capacity as demand grows.”

Wellington Airport has also experienced its busiest year in history in 2017, with over six million passengers travelling through the airport.

Singapore – Canberra services will fly via Sydney at a daily frequency, also providing the Canberra market with additional capacity to long-haul destinations.

The new service will depart Wellington to Singapore via Melbourne on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 1.45pm.
