Sydney: More seats + cheap fares = growth

Wellington Airport expects passenger numbers to grow on the Wellington to Sydney service after Pacific Blue’s announcement that it will start a Sydney service.

From September, Pacific Blue will fly to Sydney from Wellington 3 times a week.

“As a low fares airline we expect that its vigorous competition on the Sydney route will ensure the availability of very attractive fares,” said Mr Fitzgerald.

“Pacific Blue will provide very important stimulation of demand on the Sydney route in a general economic downturn,” said Mr Fitzgerald.

There has been considerable passenger growth on the Wellington to Brisbane route in response to extra capacity as Pacific Blue’s services have increased from 3 to 8 over the last 6 months.

In April, Wellington Airport’s international passengers increased to 55,770, 14.8% higher than in April 2008. This was largely due to the substantial increase of capacity to Brisbane of 36.8% relative to April 2008.

“We are looking forward to similar growth opportunities on the Sydney route as passengers take advantage of competitive air fares that are crucial to tourism, business and the Wellington lifestyle,” said Mr Fitzgerald.
