Wellington International Airport Limited (WIAL) has a diverse property portfolio of commercial, industrial, specialty retail, bulk retail and residential properties. Most of these properties are situated on the hilly outskirts of the airport, in the suburbs of Miramar, Rongotai and Kilbirnie.
Given the limited land space suitable for airport operations, it has been important to maximise the efficient use of the land area. An example of this is the joint venture agreement formed between oil companies BP Oil and Mobil Oil New Zealand Ltd. The agreement was to operate the fuel storage and hydrant system at Wellington airport. They have leased a site at the airport, sharing the structure and some infrastructural services, but beyond that continue to provide separate, competing services to the airline companies.
