International security information

Liquids, aerosols and gels

New security measures for all international flights leaving New Zealand were introduced by the New Zealand Government in 2007.

Restrictions are in place for the carriage of liquids, aerosols and gels in hand luggage on international flights. Each passenger, including children, are permitted to carry liquids, aerosols and gels in their hand luggage if each container is no more than 100ml in volume, and these containers can collectively fit into one re-sealable, 20cm x 20cm transparent plastic bag. Full details are available from Aviation Security Service.

Exemptions

Duty free and airport shopping

Any items you purchase after security are permitted in your hand luggage. If you are flying direct, you can purchase any liquid, aerosol or gel item after security, however you will not be able to carry these through airport security at a secondary location.

Baby products

Baby food, formula and other essential baby products are exempt from these restrictions. Such baby products include:

  • Baby milk/formula, in powdered form, or made-up
  • Sterilized water
  • Juice
  • Baby food in liquid or paste form
  • Vaseline or creams
  • Wet wipes

Medicines

Medicines exempted from these restrictions may include:

  • Essential prescribed medicines (a letter from your medical practitioner will need to be presented with this medicine)
  • Essential non-prescribed medicines – such as cough syrup and throat & nasal spray
  • Insulin
  • Clotting factor
  • Contact lens solution
  • Inhalers (with spare canisters to be packed into your checked luggage)

If you are carrying any of these items you should ensure that they are:

  • clearly labelled– the label should include the name of the medicine, your full name (as on your passport) and the name of the pharmacy, so it can be easily identified
  • packaged in reasonable quantities– a ‘reasonable’ quantity is defined as the amount of medication required for you to safely arrive at your destination while taking account of any unexpected delays, missed connections, lost luggage or any other circumstances that may cause you difficulty in accessing medication

Solid pills or capsules and other medical items, such as blood products, gel-filled external breast prosthesis, colostomy bags, and personal supplemental oxygen are also exempt.

Dietary requirements

You are permitted to carry any essential dietary supplements/foods that you may require in a liquid or gel form in your hand luggage. However, if these items are not essential for the duration of your flight(s) then you should pack these into your checked in baggage.
