About JR/Duty Free
JR/Duty Free took up the license as the sole Duty Free retailer at Wellington Airport in July 2009. In October 2009 new stores were opened in International Arrivals and Departures and a new level of duty free shopping has been introduced for the pleasure of Wellington international travellers.
With over 30 years experience in the Duty Free Industry, JR/Duty free has operations in both Australia and Israel. Trading as City International Duty Free James Richardson was a pioneer of the duty free industry between 1972 and 1995 when the duty free business in Australia was sold to Swiss Air – Nuance. At various times during those years, successful duty free licenses were held at Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Cairns airports in Australia. The off airport operation consisted of 23 shops at the time of its sale.
December 2005, James Richardson re-entered the duty free industry in Australia with the opening of three off airport shops, located in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth under the brand name JR/Duty Free. A further store was opened in Brisbane in mid 2008 which contains a world class luxury watch boutique.
In December 2006, James Richardson won a competitive tender to operate the duty free concession at Darwin International Airport and commenced operations on February 1 2007. The redesigned and rebuilt departure shop opened in June 2007.
James Richardson Duty Free also have credentials outside Australia. In 1988, JR started Duty Free retailing in Israel, and operates one of the largest single duty free stores the world at Ben Gurion Airport, Tel Aviv.
In July 2009 JR/Duty Free took up Duty free licenses at Wellington and Auckland Airports introducing shopping really worth "travelling for". In December 2009 JR/Duty Free won the license to be the sole operator at Christchurch Airport and opened three stores at Christchurch Airport in July 2010
